Tai Chi and Qigong

Qigong, pronounced “chee gong” are two words:

‘Qi,’ the vital life force/energy and ‘Gong’ meaning ‘a skill’.

Loosely translated, the skill of moving energy (usually referring to within one’s own body).

Qigong practices can be divided into four categories: Health, Medical, Martial, Spiritual.

There are hundreds of forms of Qigong with over two thousand years of history and overlaps of Buddhist; Daoist & Confucianist philosophies. Qigong has been shown to have many beneficial effects on health and within its varying guises can be compared with yogic practices, meditation and Reiki. A significant amount of research has been conducted and published on the practices of Qigong with demonstrating positive outcomes for health.

At Tember Health, Qigong practices from all four categories are available and can be integrated into a broader health plan with tailored practice and/or taught as a standalone practice.

Tai Chi was established during the Qing dynasty, 16th century by Chen Wang-Ting of Henan province. It was an effective form of boxing combined with ancient Daoist practices using principles and concepts intrinsic to Traditional Chinese Medicine and yin yang theory.

Tai-Chi literally means the ‘Great ultimate’. It represents the balance of Yin and Yang energies and as an art form, it is primarily practiced for health in the west.

Tai Chi Chuan (The word Chuan means fist) is the martial practice. The movements are practiced and refined through slow movement to understand the correct alignments to maximise power with minimal effort. Application is practiced and developed through a deeper understanding of each movement and additionally through Tui Shou training (Pushing hands).

The Academy of Eastern Arts offers traditional training at all levels both for health and martial practice. Certified Instructor training programs in all disciplines are also offered for those wishing to teach and/or gain a deeper understanding of the art. Contact us for more information.
